Simple
Raymond CarverA break in the clouds. The blue
outline of the mountains.
Dark yellow of the fields.
Black river. What am I doing here,
lonely and filled with remorse?I go on casually eating from the bowl
of raspberries. If I were dead,
I remind myself, I wouldn’t
be eating them. It’s not so simple.
It is that simple.

ABOUT RAYMOND CARVER
Poet and short-story writer Raymond Carver was born in the logging town of Clatskanie, Oregon. He published his first short-story and poem while at Humboldt State. His first wife, Maryann Burk, also held a series of jobs to support Carver as he began writing and eventually publishing acclaimed short-story collections such as Will You Please Be Quiet, Please?
