I used to brush your hair
when we were young together.
Now I find a last strand
in the planter
and walk out and give it
to the wind again.
We can’t save the dead
but we can free them.

Joseph Fasano is the author of many books of prose and poetry. His latest books include The Last Song of the World (BOA Editions, 2024) and The Magic Words (Tarcher, 2024).
