Hey, That’s No Way To Say Goodbye by Leonard Cohen

I can’t sleep. I can’t work. Not being part of someone’s life—I think that will always be one of my biggest hurts.

Do you know that warmth you get while in a relationship? The one where you felt so beautiful? I wonder if I’ve lost everything. I wonder if this is it for me. If there won’t be any other.

Hey, That’s No Way To Say Goodbye
Leonard Cohen

I loved you in the morning, our kisses deep and warm,
your hair upon the pillow like a sleepy golden storm,
yes, many loved before us, I know that we are not new,
in city and in forest they smiled like me and you,
but now it’s come to distances and both of us must try,
your eyes are soft with sorrow,
Hey, that’s no way to say goodbye.

I’m not looking for another as I wander in my time,
walk me to the corner, our steps will always rhyme
you know my love goes with you as your love stays with me,
it’s just the way it changes, like the shoreline and the sea,
but let’s not talk of love or chains and things we can’t untie,
your eyes are soft with sorrow,
Hey, that’s no way to say goodbye.

I just felt so compelled to reply to this. It’s like you crept into my most private thoughts, snatched them, and posted it here. I’ve felt this verysame way lately. Love once had, now lost, wondering if it will ever bestow itself on you again. It’s terrifying. But, somehow we must believe that the best part of us merely was inspired to shine when with that person- not that that person was the source of light. Does that make sense? We become better people for the love and loss that we endure, but those people neither define or complete us. The poem is lovely.

This is in the form of a song in the movie “Life as we knew it”. Both the song and the movie are high among my favourites. Thank you for posting this here and reminding me of it.

T, you’re killing me. Stop sounding like people I wish you felicitously were, and but then I must always remember that you like Bukowski. And haven’t posted a whit of Keats.

T, also please remember that true love will never die. It may lie dormant like a volcano for ages but it NEVER dies. If something dies, it was not the ultimate one… the ULTIMATE is yet to come. Wait.

  • I learned this song as sung by Judy Collins in the 60s. I loved singing it with my guitar. Only 11 or 12 then, the lyrics didn’t hold the depth they do now. The melody is softly sweet, sad…

  • I came here by chance. Read your letter to R. Wish you the very best.

From some one who is in love.

If those lyrics were sent to you, what would it mean?
